EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
I.
Introduction
As part of the curriculum, the 3rd
year Information Technology and 4th year Information System students
are expected to initiate an Educational tour on a specified destination and be
out of school for almost a week. We the third year IT students and few IS
students were out of town and been in Manila for 4 days and a day in Laguna.
We headed to Manila last September 2nd,
2012, and arrived there the 3rd of September in Paco Manila. We were
accommodated by the Garden Plaza Hotel and Suite. On the same day, we had our
first visit in PAG-ASA Main Office in Quezon City, we manage to know and see
the instruments and devices that the department is utilizing for gathering
data. We had our lunch in Carinderia Buffet by mid noon then headed to
SEAMEO-INNOTECH in Quezon City. We had discussions there about iFlex Learning
Solution and tour on the facilities. We used the leisure time in TriNoma Ayala
malls to do some shopping then back to accommodation.
September 4th 2012 we
departed to Fairview Quezon City to visit HYTEC Power, we saw robots and other
IT stuffs. Lunch is Sir Boy’s Food Republique in Tomas Morato Quezon City. We
had head our way next to GMA Network Studio in Timog Avenue, Quezon City. Then
a side went back to the accommodation and again used our free time in the
Robinson’s Ermita.
September
5th 2012 the last whole day in Manila. In Ortigas, Makati City
Fujitsu 10 is located. Fujitsu 10 is a Japanese company that supplies
technologies for Toyota and other larger companies. We had our lunch break in
Infinity Buffet and headed deeper in Makati to visit the TOEI Animation.
September
6th 2012, the last company that we are supposed to visit did not
give an approval for our visit so we used the time to go shopping again. We had
our lunch in the hotel and after that we took our leave straight to Calamba,
Laguna for recreational time in Pansol pools.
September
7th 2012 is the day we head back to Catanduanes.
II.
Objectives of the Tour
The specific objectives of the tour are:
1. Reinforcement
- The tour can reinforce or support what a teacher has been instructing in
class about a subject and help students understand a topic better.
2. Engagement- Teachers turn tours into mobile
classrooms, and engage students to collect data then assigning a project based
on what they learned during the duration of the tour.
3. Socialization-
Taking students into a new environment gives them the experience of traveling
in a group and teaches them to socialize and to be respectful of the locations
they visit.
4. New
Insights- The tour can give new insights of the things outside the school which
can raise encouragements.
5. Bonding
-They may be able to connect on more of a personal level without the structure
of the normal school days. Students may be able to spend much of the trip day
in small groups, observing, chatting and learning about each other, and it will
form a new bond among the students.
6. Real-world
experience - Students practice their skills and critical thinking abilities
outside of the controlled class setting. Being about able to ask experts about
their particular area of study on the spot requires thinking. He is able to
learn real-world lessons.
7. Fun
- No matter how much the students learn during a tour, their favorite memories
may be based on their enjoyment of the day. Students will have fun with their
friends and they also may return to the classroom with a renewed focus on their
schoolwork.
III.
Significance of the Tour
The
tour provided valuable educational opportunities away from the classroom,
without using textbooks and other used in normal school setting. Students on educational tours can often learn
while having fun in a more informal environment.
Part of how
students benefit from educational tours is by gaining new perspective on the
world. This is especially true for more extensive educational tours or trips
where students travel farther away from home. By coming into direct contact
with a different environment or even a new culture, students can better
understand their place in the community and develop openness to differences in
others.
IV.
The Educational Tour: A Narrative
September
2, 2012 (Sunday)
We travel
to Manila. We arrived at the port of Tabaco by 4 in the afternoon and
straighten out the bus provided by the Royal Quest Tours. We had our dinner in
Mang Inasal in Emarcadero in Legaspi City. After that, we travel immediately to
Manila taking a different route, we’ve passed Batangas on our way to our
destination.
September 3,
2012 (Monday)
Prior to the actual visiting
on companies, we arrive in our settlement in Belen St. Paco, Manila and settled
ourselves in Garden Plaza Hotel where we arrived considerably late because we
anticipated to be there at 5 in the morning at least but we actually arrived
there almost 8 in the morning and we we’re expected to be done fixing ourselves
before 9 am so we had to move fast and most of us were tired and wanting more
sleep before our first visit. Personally I find it really annoying; if only we
had arrived there earlier then we would have time to rest and tidy things.
We departed past 10 am headed straight to PAG-ASA
(Philippines Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration)
Main Office in Science Garden Complex
Agham Road, Diliman, Quezon City
The speaker discussed about the weather system of the Philippines which
is most certain about them. He also discussed about the El Niño and La Niña to
where the names really originated. It means “The Boy” and “The Girl”
respectively. There was also video presentations about the water cycle, storms
and the instruments that they using for data gathering. After the discussion,
they showed us the computer they are using. The device is too sensitive to outside
force so we were not allowed to enter the control room so we just have to
preview it from the outside. The computer has a processing capability close to
a super computer.
Not too long after the tour inside
the PAG-ASA building we headed back to our bus. We had our lunch in Carinderia
Buffet in Corner V. Luna
Avenue & Mabilis Street, Diliman, Quezon City. An eat-all-you-can buffet restaurant.
After the lunch is over, by 1 pm we are already at the
SEAMEO-INNOTECH (Southeast
Asian Minister of Education, Organization, Innovation and Technology) in Diliman, Quezon City.
Mrs. Grace M. Cuadro, the officer in Charge made all the introductions about
the company of the speaker. We had a short video presentation about what the
company is all about. Mr. Peirangelo B. Alejo, the Senior Specialist and Head,
Flexible Learning Solutions Unit Learning Management Office discussed about the
iFlex Learning Solution. iFLEX is the Learning Management System which
you will use for the flexible learning course and it is where majority of the
interaction between tutor and learner, and among learners will take place. iFLEX
is home for LEARNTECH eXCELS, SEAMEO INNOTECH's first competency-based,
multi-modal educational leadership flexible learning courseware for education
leaders such as emerging elementary and secondary school principals, new or
experienced headmasters of public or private schools in Southeast Asia. eXCELS
or Excellence in School Leadership for Southeast Asia is a menu of flexible
learning courses on instructional leadership. Following the discussions, we came to see the ICT
Facilities, namely, the Educational Media Resources, Learning Resource Center,
and the IT Infrastructure and Capability. We were divided into three groups so
that can accommodate us in every room we visit. Shortly after that, we were
allowed to go back to our bus. Everyone was excited for it so end because the
next venue is the TriNoma Ayala Malls. Then back to accommodation.
September 4, 2012 (Tuesday)
The third day of our travel, we ate our breakfast in
hotel before heading out. By 9:30 am we had a first company visit of the day in
HYTEC Power Inc. in #2 T. Cruz St.
Ct. Cruzville Subd. Zabarte Road, Novaliches Quezon City. I pretty much enjoyed all
the things about this company especially the robots. It’s amazing how the
inside looks so good despite the very unwelcoming front gates, there were tons
of cool gadgets and testing facilities, innovations and newly designed crafts
made by students and professionals. We were given the chance first to take a
look of those stuffs before ending up in a room for a discussion and a
demonstration. The people of the HYTEC Power show cased their works. I was
given the chance to control one of the robots they have and the one got will be
entered on an international competition soon in Malaysia. HYTEC Power Inc. aims
to fill the gap between the academe and the industry sector. They provide
trainings necessary for a particular job to defy job mismatch which is a major
cause of unemployment now a days. Shorty about the discussion and the demo we
take our leave to have our lunch Sir Boy’s Food Republique in Tomas Morato,
Quezon City which is owned by the famous Boy Abunda. Later on, we traveled to
Timog Avenue to visit the GMA Network Studio. It was raining hard as we reached
our destination and waited outside for a moment before entering the building,
strict policies I guess and the tour coordinator of the network is still
preparing some stuffs. There were different studios, the studio 2 was a small
room and was the former studio of most of the new reporting programs of the
network like that of the NewTV Channel. Then most of the programs were
transferred to a bigger studio in studio 5. AS we entered the studio, it was
massive with lights suspended almost close to the ground and only lifted used.
The other studios were almost the same so there’s not much to say about it. We
finish early earlier than we expected, so we again used the time to take a mall
trip in Robinson’s Ermita. Then back to accommodation by 9 pm to have our
dinner.
September 5, 2012 (Wednesday)
Unfortunately, this was the last whole day we had in Manila but
supposedly it’s not. We visited a Japanese Company in Ortigas, Makati City, The
Fujitsu 10. The story was, we’re divided into two batches for us to be
accommodated in the offices in the building.
My fellows from the bus two were ordered not to get out of the bus yet
not until the batch one finished their tour inside the building, but the
driver, in the middle of the traffic, they ordered us to move out of the bus,
so we did. Then we realized as we reached the building that we’re supposed to
be there yet. So there had been a little disorder happened. What happened was
we became the batch 1. We had our ID’s so we proceeded. Again, there was a
video presentation about the company, showing the technologies they are making
for other partner companies. That’s all we had about the tour in that company,
we had a short trip to the other offices then head out and waited for the
second batch to finish and for the bus then off we go to have our lunch in
Infinity Buffet. For the last visit we made was in TOEI Animation which the
most interesting part of the tour. By 2 pm we drove deeper in the heart of
Makati to visit TOEI Animation. They showed us the techniques on how they
making such animations and the technologies they are using. Once again, I was
able to experience it. I volunteered to draw using their equipments which is
totally amazing! The feeling was unforgettable. Then we transferred to another
room where most of the stuffs happening are about 3D animations. The one we
talked to, Sir Jun, showed us their work, one of it was the commercial of
Hanzel Biscuit that was televised here in the Philippines. They are also making
animation movies for other countries.
So that was the last
company we visited in Manila, but before we head home, we take a side trip and
headed straight to the Mall of Asia in Pasay City. It was also the last mall we
ever visited. Then back to accommodation to tidy our things for our leave in
the morning.
September 6, 2012 (Thursday)
The last company iACADEMY or System Generator Inc. did
not approve for our visit so we used the time in the morning to shop. It was
supposed to be in Divisoria but sadly a building caught burning and lasted for
hours and hours so we took a different venue but I decided not to come, I had
enough of what I wanted I needed so I used the time to sleep the whole morning.
We ate our lunch in the hotel and by early afternoon we check out of the hotel
and left Manila. Few hours later, earlier than 4 pm, we are in Calamba Laguna,
we checked-in in Pansol. A resort full of big pools and yes, they are amazingly
hot! We enjoyed our time there, had bonding with each other, we played, took
pictures, drink, and chatted with each other mostly about the tour. By 10 in
the evening we travelled back home.
September 7, 2012 (Friday)
We made a stop to eat our lunch by 3 am then continue
our travel. By 11 am, we are in already in Tabaco Port and hours later on we
are back in the island that officially ended our tour.
V.
Discussion
I
gained understanding to a lot of things, some are new stuffs for me and some
are not. Mostly, what I have learned are not about the things the company are
being particular of, actually, it’s about how Information Technology current
trend and the impact it causes in the National Capital Region and on other
places. In addition, I also realized that we should be more particular in what
we are doing right now to face such challenge. How job mismatch happens that
causes unemployment and this caught my attention. I’m surprised that there are
such certifications and trainings that can help to determine the right job for
someone and fill the job mismatch that is happening between the academe and
industry sector. It was mentioned that grades and school you’ve come from is
not a big deal anymore whether you’ll be accepted on a company but rather it’s
all about the skill you got and the certifications to prove it.
One
problem I saw during the visit is that, not all the companies take a deeper
look in the concept of Information Technology. It would be better if they give
more about it.
VI.
Conclusion
By making the tour and having those
companies visited actually planted the reality of life to us. It made us
realized what to do, how to do things, why we should do, when to do thing
accordingly, most common questions were answered. The exposure and engagement
we had will greatly affect our attitude towards the movement on the industry
today.

all along the way. My family who also supported me in other stuffs that I
needed by showing and telling what I should do for further betterment. To the
IT staffs and coordinators, Thank you very much!

with WebGl.
III.
Discussion
It is
very useful because it is important in our field how to make a website and how
to make a website easier. It has an application in my field because we are
going to make a website that includes web design, web context development, web
server and many more.
IV.
Conclusions
This
seminar conducted helps the students a lot. I learned that there are lots of
procedures or codes you need to type in order to make a website in a website
builder 8. I also learned the advantages and disadvantages of gaming. How can
we know if we are an MMORPG addict? I also learned in this seminar that there are
lots of free software’s that I can use when I have already a job or to find a job.
